I don’t remember when goal setting became a part of my life, but I do remember when I started to take them seriously. In 2003 I read a book called The Color Code by Taylor Hartman. Once I determined my color (white, which isn't really a color at all. Or maybe it’s all the colors. I’m learning to reframe my narrative ;) But that could be a whole other post!) then I could read all about my strengths and weaknesses. One of my weaknesses was "not good at following through on goals".
I remembering being incredulous! “What?!? I love setting goals!”
The more I read, the more I understood that setting goals and working towards goals were two different things. I did love setting them. I wasn’t so good at following through.
Shortly after that I found a piece of paper with my goals from three or four years earlier. One of them was run a half-marathon. My first thought was, "Well, I'll show that book that I can follow through on goals!" I started training and in 2004 I ran my first half-marathon.
That was the beginning of my love affair with goal setting AND goal following through.
I talked my sister-in-law into running it with me, because everything is more fun with a friend :)
